5 AI writing assistants - MindStick
As the world becomes more reliant on technology, artificial intelligence (AI) is becoming more prevalent in various industries. Writing is no exception, with AI writing assistants becoming increasingly popular among writers, bloggers, and content creators. In this blog, we'll explore five AI writing assistants that can help improve your writing productivity and quality. Grammarly is one of the most popular AI writing assistants available today. It is an all-in-one writing tool that checks your grammar, spelling, punctuation, and sentence structure. Grammarly has a free version and a premium version, with the latter offering more advanced features such as plagiarism detection, genre-specific writing style checks, and a readability score.
AI generations can be copyrighted now - on one condition
In a Statement of policy (opens in new tab) published earlier this month, the Office's Director Shira Perlmutter wrote: "In the case of works containing AI-generated material, the Office will consider whether the AI contributions are the result of'mechanical reproduction' or instead of an author's'own original mental conception, to which [the author] gave visible form.'" Perlmutter describes that the analysis would be on a "case-by-case" basis in order to assess whether the human is the true author of the content. An example of a denied application would involve an AI writer receiving a prompt and generating new "complex written, visual, or musical" content. This could involve the creative arrangement of AI-generated content or further editing whereby AI content is considered merely a template for further work. In order to help distinguish AI from human-generated content, there have been discussions of watermarking work created by machines, but so far that has proven troublesome.

Sci-fi becomes real as renowned magazine closes submissions due to AI writers
One side effect of unlimited content-creation machines--generative AI--is unlimited content. On Monday, the editor of the renowned sci-fi publication Clarkesworld Magazine announced that he had temporarily closed story submissions due to a massive increase in machine-generated stories sent to the publication. In a graph shared on Twitter, Clarkesworld editor Neil Clarke tallied the number of banned writers submitting plagiarized or machine-generated stories. The numbers totaled 500 in February, up from just over 100 in January and a low baseline of around 25 in October 2022. The rise in banned submissions roughly coincides with the release of ChatGPT on November 30, 2022. Large language models (LLM) such as ChatGPT have been trained on millions of books and websites and can author original stories quickly.
